Finishing the

Race!

2 Timothy 4:7 (AMP), I have fought the good (worthy, honorable, and noble) fight, I have finished the race, I have kept (firmly held) the faith.

Motor Racing is more complex than just going round and round on the track! There are many significant things that have to be done in the shop, in the pits and on the track to obtain the goal of “winning the race!”  What every driver and crew dreads is the “DNF.” Our desires in racing and in life is that we have a smooth race and every thing goes right. As we all know every thing doesn’t always go right all the time, some times there are a few crashes.  When I was speaking with one of the teams,  I ask them “what was needed for them to be more competitive,” they responded “track control.”   We know one race doesn’t constitute the whole season, so be it in life as well!  The “chase is always on!”  Let’s look at three critical things to “Finishing the Race” . . .

Persevere ~ to persist in a state, enterprise, or undertaking in spite of counterinfluences, opposition, or discouragement .” ~ 1 Thess. 3:6, But now that Timothy has just come back to us from [his visit to] you and has brought us the good news of [the steadfastness of] your faith and [the warmth of your] love . . . Phil. 3:4, “pressing toward the goal.”

Pay Attention ~“Listen to the Divine Spotter.” ~ I Kings 19:12, And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire [a sound of gentle stillness and] a still, small voice.

Pass the Past ~I do not consider, brethren, that I have captured and made it my own [yet]; but one thing I do [it is my one aspiration]: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead. ~ (Phil. 3:13)

Staying

in Control

It was the first race of the Chase and the one driver that seemed to be dominating in all three divisions Kyle Bush announced to his crew chief that his car was uncontrollable!  The problem that got him out of control was the sway bar, it’s “a bar that torsionally couples the right and left front-wheel suspensions of an automobile to reduce roll and sway.”  He tried to keep his speed up to stay competitive and because he had no controlling factor on the suspension, he crashed!  Let us take this mechanical truth and make spiritual application on how to “Stay in Control.”  Let’s consider that the . . .

Ø      Sway Bar controls the path of the car . . .

Ø      Some people also get out of control in life because they do not have a Spiritual Sway Bar . . . Proverbs 14:12 (Amplified Bible), There is a way which seems right to a man and appears straight before him, but at the end of it is the way of death.

Ø      Some religious people have a head knowledge of the Scriptures yet lack a relationship with Jesus Christ ~ this relationship can only be on track with the “Spiritual Sway Bar” (the Holy Spirit) to guide the victorious ride!

Ø      Spiritually this Sway Bar keeps us on track and keeps us from crashing . . .Gal. 5:22-23 (Amplified Bible), But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness, 23) Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law [that can bring a charge].

Pressing on to

The Finish Line . . .

I press toward the goal for the prize of the

upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Phil. 3:14 (NKJV)

Today’s chapel service will think on the subject of “Pressing on to the Finish Line” let us consider the following . . .

Ø     Pressing On! ~ The Scripture above talks about a “spiritual prize” the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus!  In each race the one on the track and the spiritual race of life each team is “pressing on” to a race that needs to be won!  In both of these races this “pressing” must be persistence and perseverance that we talked about several weeks ago!

Ø     Today, there is a fight that has to be fought and it’s not the kind of fight you think it is! . . .

Ø     It is the Good Fight . . . 2 Timothy 4:7(a) (AMP), I have fought the good (worthy, honorable, and noble) fight . . .

§        The Fight to the Finish Line needs to be . . .

§        Worthy ~ give it your best shot!!!

§        Honorable ~ knowing it was obtained on your racing skill not on your ability to take some one out!

§        Noble ~ gallant and sportsmanlike

These all apply to our Spiritual Race of Life as well!

Ø     Holding on to Faith (confidence) ~ 2 Timothy 4:7(b), I have finished the race, I have kept (firmly held) the faith. Faith is a powerful spiritual thing because of the object of our faith ~ the Almighty Supernatural and Powerful God that can do all things!  I talked with many of the drivers this year and some had told me what I already knew . . . that they knew God’s presence was with them all through the race!

Let us all press on to the Finish Line!
